<image:caption>Nick Tsiavos is a bassist and composer whose work operates at the intersections of a number of cultural boundaries: from the mystery and beauty of 6th century Byzantium and the 12th century Medieval West, to the instability and anarchy of the present, he explores the deconstructive moment as Ancient Chant collides with the energies of Modernism, contemporary Minimalism and experimental improvisation. 'The way Tsiavos talks, like his music, is a flow of weighty ideas and metaphysical reflections....audio odysseys that have made him one of Australia's most enigmatic and interesting musicians and composers.' <image:caption>David Brown has been involved in the Melbourne avant-garde, art rock/punk rock scene since the mid-seventies. The focus of his solo project “candlesnuffer” has increasingly centred on the development of composing techniques which meld opposing streams like conventional electroacoustic methods with noise and rock and also the development of a vocabulary of tiny acoustic sounds enlarged outside their normal context. He has continued to develop a vocabulary that runs the gamut from rock bassist through experimental guitarist to sound artist and has recently completed a PhD project researching the use of electroacoustic compositions in a public hospital Emergency Department. www.candlesnuffer.org</image:caption>

He is an influential teacher, though not always in the most traditional sense, preferring to lead by example rather than to stand and lecture and as such has inspired many students who have then gone on to their own influential paths. This has led him to believe that he is in fact the reincarnation of the same and he has therefore spent most of his life ignoring functional harmony focussing instead on dysfunctional harmony, much to the chagrin of anybody that has heard him perform live. He is a polymath speaking 17 languages fluently, including several forgotten Norwegian dialects from isolated communities in the far North of Scandinavia. His Doctoral Thesis "The Mathematical and Dietary Relationships between Insect Calls and Dagamba Drum Rhythms", has won him outstanding recognition in the fields of Ethnomusicology, Mathematics and Entomology. The music and stories he has since created reflects the places he has been and the people he has touched throughout his journey across the world as a refugee, finally settling in Australia. Valanga charms his audiences with humour and wit, telling stories that are embellished by beautiful music form many traditional instruments such as the kalimba, marimba and shijoro (jaw harp) aswell as irresistable rhythms from the guitar, percussion and Valanga’s velvety voice. Valanga has performed and warmed audiences of adults and children at selected world music events and in many schools across Australia and the Pacific.
